First Things First

No matter whether you participated in First Things First Pre-Orientation, we invite FGLI students from all class years to come together for the First Things First: Next Steps series!

Our next session, Fresh Start, is TODAY, MONDAY (February 14th) from 4:30-5:30pm in The Resource Center! Did Fall term not unfold as gracefully as you hoped? Are you hoping to “get on track” for Spring? We will reflect on how to carry forward lessons from last semester, and how to build on these in ways that serve us and show ourselves care in the months ahead. We will review resources we vaguely remember hearing about once upon a time, and we will discuss how to move into 2022 with a sense of positive possibility. A fresh start.

Join us for conversation, reflection, information, and validation. And for snacks. There are always snacks.  Full series schedule below! Put them all in your calendar!

Student Ombuds

The Student Ombuds at Wesleyan are available to talk with students about their concerns related to experiences in the classroom, with their athletic team, or within other parts of their academic and campus life at Wesleyan. Each Ombud serves as a neutral and confidential* peer resource focused on empowering students to successfully navigate the institution and advocate for themselves in moments of conflict, particularly when there are power dynamic considerations.  Although separate from the University’s Ombudsperson for staff and faculty, the Student Ombuds use similar conflict resolution and restorative justice practices.

*The Student Ombuds stand with survivors of sexual misconduct, though they do not serve as a confidential resource for these matters. If you need confidential support related to sexual misconduct, please reach out to SHAPE, CAPS, Office of Religious and Spiritual Life.

Sustainability Office is Hiring

To all those interested in improving sustainability at Wesleyan, the Sustainability Office is hiring for 2 positions: 1 Sustainability Coordinator and 1 Waste Not Coordinator! We welcome ALL students (2023, 2024, and 2025) who are passionate about campus engagement to apply. 

  • Sustainability Coordinators (SCs) design and run independent projects that promote holistic sustainability and run Waste Not (the annual student-run tag sale) 
  • The Waste Not Coordinator plans and runs Waste Not with the SCs

Applicants should be self-directed, organized, and strong communicators. The position will require about 5 hours per week, paid at $13/hour ($14/hour starting in August 2022), with a requirement to work through Senior Week and return early during Orientation week, as well as occasional remote meetings in the summer. This position will be filled by students regardless of their work-study eligibility, with preference given to work-study eligible students.

Restorying our World: The narrative act for collective healing and liberation

If we want to change our world, we must begin by changing our stories. 

Stories are how we make sense of who we are and who we want to become, yet in times of injustice they have also been used as a tool for manipulation. This workshop/webinar explores how stories have shaped our world, and how we can use them to identify and transform conflicts. It helps us see the power of stories in our day to day lives, as well as the dominant narratives and myths that define our societies. 

We will practice new storytelling methods to imagine new narratives. This is what we call re-storying our world: the narrative act for collective healing and liberation.
